His best friend Rhodey is one of the Academy's most promising cadets. Tony is working on a Jaeger one day, and Rhodey suggests the name "Whiskey Tango" as a joke, because honestly White Boy, some of the shit you pull is pretty trashy, but Tony, not knowing what it meant, loved the name. The name stuck, despite Rhodey dropping hints that maybe it's not such a great name. It's only years later when they end up pilot Whiskey Tango together that Tony find out the meaning of the name from a laughing ground crew member. Nobody really knows whether to laugh or cry, given Whiskey's pilots.
